From DRBU President Susan Rounds:

We are delighted to announce that DRBU has been granted accreditation by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. The commission voted unanimously on February 15, 2018 to grant DRBU accreditation for a term of six years, the longest possible term. Achieving accreditation is an important milestone for DRBU on a path that began more than 40 years ago, when the University was founded by the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua.

Since receiving the good news, I have found myself thinking a great deal about those early days. The Master always encouraged those of us who were helping in this work to “think big,” because, he said, in the future DRBU would become one of the leading educational institutions in this country, and in the world. He invited world leaders to become honorary chancellors, among them Paul Cardinal Yu Bin, President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt, Elder Upasaka Lee Ping-nan, and José López Portillo, President of Mexico.

Master Hua was deeply involved in every aspect of the new University, including designing the curriculum, developing the unique pedagogy, and teaching classes. He paid attention to even the smallest details. When we were planning the first big graduation ceremony for DRBU, held in 1984, he supervised the order of the program and the composition of the guest list, and wrote the words to our DRBU school song, “Jin Syu Kung.” He even designed the graduation caps to be worn by Sangha members.

Receiving accreditation brings us closer to realizing Master Hua’s vision. This wonderful achievement would not have been possible without the support of DRBA, the community at CTTB, and the tireless dedication of many people who have worked over the years to support DRBU. We have a lot of work to do to expand the University even further. Our accreditation makes that growth possible.
